Nick ❦ Friday

“Everything okay, Pumpkin?” Nick asked, leaning over to whisper the words into his J’s ear as the caterers brought out the second course for the rehearsal dinner.

“Yep,” Jeremy answered sunnily, reaching for his wine. “Perfect. You?”

Nick grinned. “I guess that spa stuff really works then. Next time, we’ll be sure to schedule those lettuce wraps you wanted, too.”

“Um, that would be a seaweed wrap,” Jeremy said, laughing and looking kind of amazing, all lit up and glowing. “Sorry, Nick, but I’m not an hors d’oeuvre.”

He looked so happy that, for a minute, Nick almost fucked it up by asking if J had heard something he hadn’t about all the little wedding glitches that were still technically unresolved. But nope. Not gonna go there. Not now that Jeremy had finally managed to unwind a little.

When they’d finished at the fussy spa thing that Jeremy had been so excited about, Nick had had a message waiting from Beck assuring him that everything was going to be taken care of. Even without specifics, Beck’s word was good enough for Nick, and after his mini-breakdown on the massage table, J really did seem to have let it go.

“Love you, Pumpkin,” Nick said, his words interrupted by the chime of silver against glass.

“Oh, God. Are we doing toasts already?” Jeremy asked, grinning.

He leaned against Nick’s shoulder heavily enough that Nick had to wonder how much of J’s relaxation was due to the couple’s massage, and how much to the wine. Either way, Jeremy happy? He’d take it.

“Already?” Danny called from across the table, grinning at the two of them. “You know we’ve been waiting on this chance for just about ever, right, Jeremy?”

“Please tell me you’re not going to embarrass me, Danny,” J said, going a gorgeous shade of pink. “We’ve got way too much history to air the night before I finally snag my man.”

“I don’t think Nick’s going anywhere,” Gavin said. “And based on some of the stories he told us when you two flew out for Sherri’s vow renewal ceremony—”

“Nope,” Nick said, cutting him off. “No getting me in trouble, Gavin. I’ve still gotta put a ring on it.”

“Say that again, but this time try to let your inner Beyoncé out,” Danny offered helpfully.

“No pre-wedding karaoke until I get a chance to make a toast,” Beck said, laughing from the other end of the table where he was still standing, champagne glass in hand. “Because I love Nick, but if we let him sing, it really will send Jeremy running for the hills.”

“Hey,” Nick protested, grinning. “J’s heard me sing before.”

“Our shower does have good acoustics,” Jeremy said loyally, twining his fingers through Nick’s under the table.

Nick squeezed his hand. J was 100% Team Us, as always.

“Oh, honey,” Danny said, shaking his head sadly as he gave Jeremy a pitying look. “If that’s what you two are doing in your shower…”

“Shut up,” Jeremy said, laughing. “I want to hear what Beck has to say. And just for the record, I’m fully onboard with embarrassing stories, just as long as they don’t involve me.
